The difference between gaskets and seals

Gasket basics

While there are some similarities between gaskets and seals, there are also some distinct differences. A gasket is a flat-surfaced seal connection between two different parts. On the other hand, a seal is used to seal a gap between two rotating parts like an engine, pump, or shaft. As a result, gasket seals are used when a static seal is required for a leak-free connection.

Gaskets are widely used in various industries, including oil and gas, power generation, pulp and paper, and transportation. They are made of various materials such as Viton, neoprene, nitrile, natural rubber, and SBR. These are just a few of the different materials used for gaskets.

Seal basics

Seals are used in rotating machines, engines, pumps, and shafts. Seals, as opposed to gaskets, perform a slightly more dynamic function. Seals are frequently moulded or machined products cut into dynamic shapes to fit precisely into the component parts. Seals are a little more complicated than gaskets because they have an outer ring and an inner surface. The outer ring is made of metal and sits directly on top of the rubber inner surface. Because they fit perfectly within one another, the inner circle is slightly tilted and forms a lip for the seal. The inner circle is meant to act as a second barrier against any liquid that passes through the outer ring.
