Which Materials Make the Best Hydraulic Seals?

Here is a rundown of some of the most commonly used materials for producing hydraulic seals.

Fluoroelastomer

Fluoroelastomer is best used in situations where extremely high temperatures are present, since they are highly resistant to temperatures exceeding 204,444°C.

It is a popular option in being resistant to most hydraulic fluids, giving it a wide range of industrial applications.

This material, is not, however, very resistant to mineral oils, greases and other hydrocarbons, limiting its application in some situations.

PTFE

PTFE, otherwise known as Polytetrafluoroethylene, is a synthetic formula with a massive range of applications. The compound was first discovered in 1936 and is still widely used today.

It is a good solution for general sealing products, making it ideal for precision rubber products. It offers low levels of friction and excellent chemical resistance.

PTFE, however, is not elastomeric, and as a result, requires energization to be used.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane is often used for general sealing, much like its PTFE cousin, and as such, offers many of the same benefits.

It has excellent wear-resistance, and unlike PTFE, doesn’t require any energisation to be used effectively.

Nitrile

Nitrile is commonly used for fluid power cylinders, but has a range of other industrial applications.

It has a rubbery consistency, making it ideal for hydraulic seals, and it holds a number of advantages. Nitrile is particularly cost-effective and also offers remarkable resistance.

Tagging on to the low price, however, nitrile isn’t quite durable enough to be applied to smooth surface finishes, but still offers a cost-effective solution when they are needed on a temporary basis.
